What is lumbricals foot?

Lumbricals are four small muscles located in the foot, situated between the tendons of the flexor digitorum longus and the interosseous muscles. They originate from the flexor digitorum longus tendon and insert into the extensor expansion at the base of the toes.

Their main function is to flex the metatarsophalangeal joints and extend the interphalangeal joints of the toes. They also provide stability to the foot during walking and balance.

In addition, lumbricals help to regulate the distribution of pressure and weight bearing in the foot. Dysfunction or injury of the lumbricals can result in foot deformities, such as claw toe, and can lead to abnormal gait patterns and balance issues. Physical therapy and strengthening exercises may be recommended to improve lumbrical function.
